Claire Martin, PhD, LPC, NCC, ACS, BC-TMH (she/her), is an Assistant Professor in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at Webster University and the Clinical Coordinator for its online program. She holds a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision and an MEd in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, as well as an MA in Psychology from Hunter College, City University of New York.

Martin is committed to advancing the globalization of mental health by strengthening counselors’ competencies in multiculturalism and trauma-informed practices. She integrates diversity science into her teaching and provides culturally competent, trauma-informed clinical supervision to counselors-in-training pursuing state licensure. As a licensed mental health counselor, she offers culturally responsive and trauma-informed counseling services to marginalized communities through her private practice. Martin is a nationally board-certified and licensed professional counselor (LPC) in the state of Missouri with extensive clinical experience with complex trauma. She is certified in eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) and trauma-focused cognitive behavior therapy (TF-CBT) and uses these modalities in her practice to help individuals heal from trauma.

Martin's research and public speaking engagements center on the intersection of oppression, discriminatory policies and practices, and the development of racial trauma in marginalized populations. She has presented nationally and internationally on Black women’s experiences. She is also a research associate member for the Center for Communally Bonded Research (CCBR). In 2019, she received the Counseling Fellowship in Social Justice Award, and in 2020, the E. Desmond Lee Urban Education Scholarship from the University of Missouri-St. Louis; both are awarded based on scholarly interests and advocacy that reflect a commitment to social justice in counseling and urban education.

A recognized emerging leader in the counseling field, Martin serves as the Midwest Regional Representative for the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development (AMCD), a division of the American Counseling Association (ACA) dedicated to promoting multicultural competence among counselors. She also co-chairs the Special Initiatives Group for the Association for Specialists in Group Work (ASGW).

Earlier in her career, she worked as a Program Evaluator and consultant for Children’s Services in New York City, assessing nonprofit agencies serving immigrant and refugee families.
A Note From Me
I use the pronouns she, her, and hers. I identify as a first-generation Haitian immigrant and a Black woman living in St. Louis, Missouri. My passion for advocating for others, challenging the status quo, and advocating for systemic change for a more equitable world stems from my genetic predisposition and life experiences. Born in Haiti and raised in a working-class community, I watched my parents working tirelessly to provide my siblings and me with the best education they could while caring for others. I spent most of my formative years in New York City, where I developed a strong awareness of the importance of using education, expertise, and personal experiences to empower marginalized communities and create pathways for others.

As an individual with diverse, marginalized identities, I possess a heightened awareness of race, gender, and class issues and a deep understanding of the systemic structures that oppress underrepresented communities.
Using my passion for multicultural counseling and in-depth knowledge of racial trauma and other forms of trauma, I center my scholarly pursuits and advocacy work to help advance the mental health field by advocating for anti-racist policies and practices.
